{"id":854,"date":"2019-01-24T11:31:41","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T11:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/dental\/?page_id=854"},"modified":"2019-01-24T11:31:41","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T11:31:41","slug":"endodontics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/dental\/about\/referral-information-for-dental-practitioners\/restorative-dentistry\/endodontics\/","title":{"rendered":"Endodontics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are unable to accept referrals for molar endodontics (either primary or retreat) unless the tooth is of strategic importance \u2013 this would, for example, include teeth that are supporting essential bridgework.<\/p>\n<p>The following are acceptable reasons (in non-molar teeth) for referral:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A second opinion is required.<\/li>\n<li>A treatment plan is required.<\/li>\n<li>There is a specific problem with the tooth, which cannot otherwise be treated in general practice. For example &#8211; management of open apices, resorption and trauma.<\/li>\n<li>Where the medical history supports endodontic therapy rather than extraction (e.g. risk of osseonecrosis due to bisphosphonate medication or previous radiotherapy).<\/li>\n<li>Where conventional endodontics has failed and a surgical approach may be required on any tooth other than a molar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the above reason for referral, the following criteria must be met:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The patient is a regular attender in practice and is well motivated with no active caries or periodontal disease.<\/li>\n<li>The letter of referral contains an indication of the history of the problem and of the treatment carried out to date.<\/li>\n<li>The tooth must be restorable and functional.<\/li>\n<li>A recent (within three months) high quality periapical radiograph of the tooth in question must be sent with the referral letter.
