{"id":857,"date":"2019-01-24T11:34:30","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T11:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/dental\/?page_id=857"},"modified":"2019-01-24T11:34:30","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T11:34:30","slug":"periodontics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/dental\/about\/referral-information-for-dental-practitioners\/restorative-dentistry\/periodontics\/","title":{"rendered":"Periodontics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patients with more complex periodontal conditions may require specialist treatment. \u00a0Any referred patient should have received appropriate periodontal care (detailed in the referral along with a recent BPE \/other detailed periodontal record), in keeping with Greater Manchester LDN Healthy Gums DO Matter Practitioner\u2019s Toolkit and the British Society of Periodontology Parameters of Care:<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bsperio.org.uk\/publications\">www.bsperio.org.uk\/publications<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>As there is limited access to specialist periodontal services referrals will only be accepted if the patient has engaged with a process of improving their periodontal health and there is a specific problem with the periodontal tissues, which is beyond the scope of general dental practice.\u00a0 For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A concurrent medical factor that is affecting the periodontal tissues<\/li>\n<li>Patients requiring complex restorative treatment planning<\/li>\n<li>Patients with combined periodontal and endodontic lesions<\/li>\n<li>Patients requiring combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment<\/li>\n<li>Patients either at risk of or having been identified with aggressive periodontitis<\/li>\n<li>A strong family history of early tooth loss due to periodontitis in a patient with periodontal disease<\/li>\n<li>Advanced periodontitis in a young patient<\/li>\n<li>Patients with desquamative gingivitis<\/li>\n<li>Where residual chronic periodontitis persists after periodontal treatment<\/li>\n<li>Patients requiring periodontal surgery, such as crown-lengthening procedures, and for the surgical management of mucogingival problems (e.g. treatment of gingival recession or gingival overgrowth)<\/li>\n<li>Recent high quality radiographs must be sent with the referral letter.
