{"id":1811,"date":"2019-12-02T16:37:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T16:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/mri\/?p=1811"},"modified":"2025-10-23T14:20:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T14:20:04","slug":"mri-doctor-wins-prestigious-national-charity-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/mri\/mri-doctor-wins-prestigious-national-charity-award\/","title":{"rendered":"MRI doctor wins prestigious national charity award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">A haematologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) has been honoured by blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan for her work on post-transplant care, at an awards ceremony held at the Tower of London. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Dr Fiona Dignan took home the award for Clinical Supporter of the Year Award at the Anthon<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2390 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/07\/FD-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/>y Nolan Supporter Awards 2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The award is in recognition of her support of patients undergoing stem cell transplantation for blood cancers including acute myeloid leukaemia.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">She has been instrumental in bringing together leading healthcare professionals, local NHS representatives and patients in the development of Anthony Nolan\u2019s new post-transplant care pathway \u2013 which sets out the services and support transplant patients need during recovery. She also champions patient experiences as a key member of NHS England\u2019s Blood and Marrow Transplantation Clinical Reference Group.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">On receiving the award, Dr Dignan said: \u201cI\u2019m really pleased with the award- it really was a joint effort.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cI see first-hand the many physical and psychological problems that patients face post-transplant. This regular contact with patients who are cured but still not well is what motivated me to get involved in Anthony Nolan\u2019s work\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Henny Braund, Chief Executive at Anthony Nolan, said: \u2018Dr Dignan is a hugely deserving winner of this award; her incredible support and passion for our work is a fantastic example of our charity, which is built on making lifesaving connections. I continue to find myself inspired and humbled by the dedication and strength of supporters like her. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">\u2018By providing the best clinical and post-transplant care, we are curing blood cancer together. We can give families hope, and give more people a future. But without supporters like Dr Fiona Dignan, lives can\u2019t be saved. Without her, there is no cure.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The awards took place on Thursday 28 November at the Tower of London. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Anthony Nolan is the charity that finds matching stem cell donors for people with blood cancer and blood disorders and gives them a second chance at life.
