This includes increased capacity, and a more streamlined layout to ensure patients continue to receive high quality emergency treatment and care in an improved environment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The \u00a340 million renovation project will boost the capabilities of MRI, which<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">is a Major Trauma Centre for Greater Manchester and part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Upgraded facilities will include an expanded and improved Emergency Department, including 10 (up from 6) resuscitation bays and 27 (up from 16) majors cubicles. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plans also include the creation of six new operating theatres, which will support the hospital\u2019s developing role as a regional centre for specialist surgery.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2875 wpsmartcrop-image\" src=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/MRI.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/MRI.jpg 752w, https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/MRI-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/MRI-60x40.jpg 60w, https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2021\/05\/MRI-680x453.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" data-smartcrop-focus=\"[50,50]\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Integrated Health Projects (IHP), an established joint venture between VINCI Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine, has been appointed as construction partner for the new build development.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Construction is expected to start later in the year. Temporary changes to the department\u2019s access and layout will be put in place to ensure it can continue to operate fully throughout the works. In total, construction is expected to take just over three years to complete.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Vanessa Gardener, Chief Executive of MRI,<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> said: \u201cManchester is a rapidly developing city, with a much larger population and different health requirements to the 1980s when our current Emergency Department was first built. These exciting plans lay out our vision for a new and improved department that will best support the needs of Manchester and beyond, now and in decades to come, for the communities we serve and our staff who work in this department. The new operating theatres will likewise enable us to modernise our surgical facilities and support our growing role as regional centre for emergency, major trauma, vascular, head and neck cancer, liver, transplant and other specialist surgery.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWith Manchester City Council\u2019s approval, we look forward to carrying out the delicate and carefully planned work to make this concept a reality, while continuing to deliver high standards of care for our patients throughout the construction process.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Julia Bridgewater, Chief Operating Officer at MFT,<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> said: \u201cMFT is the largest NHS Trust in England, with ten hospitals and a wide spread of clinical specialisms. These plans for MRI ED have been thoughtfully considered to best work in co-ordination with our other hospitals, and incorporate the capabilities of these different fields. This major transformation project will mean patients presenting at the MRI ED can be seen by the right people and receive the right treatment quicker in a much improved patient environment.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council<\/strong>, said: \u201cIf this year has taught us anything it\u2019s that the resilience of our health service is the difference between disaster and survival. And at the front line of this is our A&amp;E departments.
