Stem cell transplant recipient Steve has completed a 1,000-mile bike ride across the UK, six years after lifesaving treatment at Manchester Royal Infirmary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve, 64, from Lancashire, was training to cycle from Land\u2019s End to John O\u2019Groats when a routine GP check-up in 2019 changed his life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI thought I was a fit and healthy man, just living my life and training for this bike ride. I had just finished working as an accountant and starting to think about the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt a regular health check at my doctor\u2019s, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and told I needed a stem cell transplant.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen your bone marrow doesn\u2019t work, it means you can\u2019t make healthy\u00a0blood\u00a0and your immune system essentia\"Smilinglly collapses.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve lives in Wrea Green, a small village in Lancashire, and was referred to Manchester Royal Infirmary, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), for specialist care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthony Nolan, the charity that matches stem cell donors with people in need of a transplant, helped to search for a suitable donor. Close relatives are often checked first, but Steve\u2019s sister was not a match, meaning the search had to be widened.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve said: \u201cMy first transplant failed, so I had to leave hospital and then be re-admitted. Anthony Nolan\u00a0identified\u00a0a donor in Germany, but it was just as Covid was hitting and borders were closing. It was a\u00a0pretty scary\u00a0time, but thankfully I managed to pull through.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe transplant itself is\u00a0relatively simple; it looks like a regular blood transfusion, and I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0feel any different afterwards. I\u00a0probably got\u00a0off quite lightly compared to others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the chemotherapy given alongside it, to kill off the remaining old faulty cells in the bone marrow, that makes you poorly.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a stem cell transplant, patients are\u00a0monitored\u00a0closely in hospital while healthcare teams check whether the new cells are starting to make healthy bone marrow. This can take several weeks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve said: \u201cI was in hospital for five months. Every day they test your blood, and you just pray there are signs of improvement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was during the Covid pandemic, and I had a\u00a0really low\u00a0immune system, which meant I had no visitors while I was in hospital for five months. It was\u00a0a very difficult\u00a0time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll the Haematology staff were incredible. Their compassion and\u00a0professionalism made\u00a0an unbearable situation bearable.\u00a0\u00a0The support services were also\u00a0absolutely fantastic, and I\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0have asked for better care.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After months in hospital, Steve was able to return home and gradually began to build up his strength and confidence. He also wanted to give something back to the services that had cared for him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIn 2024 I ran to become a Public Governor for Rest of England and Wales at MFT, so I could give something back and help improve services for patients.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Six years after first setting himself the challenge, Steve has now completed the Land\u2019s End to John O\u2019Groats ride, raising \u00a37,500 for Anthony Nolan.<\/span> \"Two<\/span><\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt was enjoyable, but\u00a0very hard\u00a0work, as you can imagine. You ride for about\u00a070\u00a0 miles\u00a0a day for 15 days in a row \u2013 and climb the equivalent of one and a half times the height of Mount Everest!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI rode with Vince, my friend of over 30 years, and people came and met us along the way. It was great to be out in the countryside.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steve has also fundraised for MFT Charity through the Great Manchester Run and is due to compete in the British Transplant Games as a stem cell transplant recipient.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fiona Dignan, Consultant\u00a0Haematologist\u00a0at Manchester Royal\u00a0Infirmary\u00a0said:<\/h3>\n

\u201cIt is wonderful to see Steve doing so well following his treatment and using his experience to give back to our Trust and support others. Stem cell transplants can be a highly effective treatment for blood cancer, and Steve\u2019s story shows the life-changing impact this care can have.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
