A new model of children\u2019s cancer treatment, delivering chemotherapy and supportive cancer treatments on a mobile cancer care unit, has been launched by Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and partners.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0pilot\u00a0project\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0mobile\u00a0cancer\u00a0care\u00a0unit is a partnership project between the\u00a0North West\u00a0Children\u2019s Cancer Operational Delivery Network (NWCCODN) and the charity\u00a0Hope for\u00a0Tomorrow,\u00a0who have provided the mobile unit. It is funded by the three Cancer Alliances within the\u00a0North West\u00a0(Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, Cheshire and Merseyside\u00a0Cancer Alliance and Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance) and delivered by staff from MFT\u2019s Royal Manchester Children\u2019s Hospital and Alder Hey Children\u2019s Hospital.\"Inside<\/p>\n

Around 600 children are treated for cancer\u00a0in\u00a0The\u00a0North West\u00a0region each year.\u00a0<\/strong>Children, young\u00a0people\u00a0and their families across the\u00a0North West\u00a0of England face significant travel challenges to access specialist cancer care. Unlike adults, children and young people who are being treated for cancer must journey further due to the limited number of specialist centers.\u00a0Families often\u00a0travel\u00a0hundreds of miles for treatment on multiple occasions. These journeys can place considerable time and financial\u00a0pressures\u00a0on families, with recent\u00a0North West\u00a0data showing an average monthly travel cost of \u00a3245 and an average one-way journey of 54 miles.<\/p>\n

Hope for Tomorrow\u00a0provide\u00a0a fleet of mobile cancer care units\u00a0that are used\u00a0across the country to\u00a0provide adult cancer\u00a0care,\u00a0however this is\u00a0the first time one\u00a0will be used to treat children and young people.<\/p>\n

The unit will transform how children and young people with cancer receive treatment in Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire, South Lancashire, Cumbria and North Wales, leading to reduction in\u00a0reducing travel, stress, and\u00a0time away from home, school and family life and will complement existing services provided by local\u00a0Paediatric\u00a0Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCU) and Children\u2019s Community Nursing Teams.<\/p>\n

Nurses from the Royal Manchester Children\u2019s Hospital and Alder Hey Children\u2019s\u00a0Foundation\u00a0Trust\u00a0oncology\u00a0units are now delivering treatments\u00a0on\u00a0the specially\u00a0purposed mobile\u00a0unit\u00a0placed\u00a0in\u00a0community\u00a0settings\u00a0across the\u00a0North West\u00a0Region.<\/u>\u00a0Selected chemotherapy and supportive treatments, which are typically administered in a day\u00a0case\u00a0clinic\u00a0will be delivered closer to a patient\u2019s home.\"Group<\/p>\n

Aligned with the NHS 10 Year Plan and the\u00a0National\u00a0Cancer\u00a0Plan, Care Closer to Home (CC2H) is a proof-of-concept project funded by the regional Cancer Alliances and currently funded until July 2026. The project will be evaluated to understand the impact upon children receiving treatment for cancer and their families.<\/p>\n

The nurses delivering the CC2H project bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from their work within the\u00a0Paediatric\u00a0Principal Treatment\u00a0Centres, with comprehensive orientation and induction processes in place to ensure they are fully prepared for project delivery, service development, and the community based elements of the role.<\/p>\n

The mobile cancer care unit will park in convenient\u00a0locations\u00a0assessed\u00a0as safe and\u00a0appropriate.\u00a0Sites\u00a0such as supermarkets and garden centers\u00a0have been\u00a0identified\u00a0across the region.<\/p>\n

Sohail Munshi, Joint Chief Medical Officer at MFT, said:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cBy working closely with our partners across the\u00a0North West, we are helping to bring vital cancer care closer to home for children and their families.\u00a0This first-of-its-kind-project is an important part of MFT\u2019s commitment to reducing health inequalities, making treatment more accessible and more convenient for all communities we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

The impact of care delivered in this way will be\u00a0evaluated and presented to funders and those across the region responsible for providing care for children and young people with cancer.\u00a0It is hoped that where a clear benefit can be\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0a more permanent solution may be agreed and put in place.<\/p>\n

Professor Bernadette Brennan,\u00a0Paediatric\u00a0Oncologist and Lead Cancer Clinician at Royal Manchester Children\u2019s Hospital, said:\u00a0\u201cWhen you look at our RMCH oncology outpatients and\u00a0day case\u00a0unit, you often see patients who have travelled more than 100 miles for a simple bolus chemotherapy treatment that takes only minutes.\u00a0The new mobile unit will bring this care closer to home, reducing travel, cutting\u00a0costs\u00a0and significantly improving patients\u2019 quality of life\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
