{"id":4330,"date":"2020-11-04T10:00:39","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T10:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/saint-marys\/manchester-research-leads-to-nice-recommendation-for-lynch-syndrome-screening-for-womb-cancer-patients-2\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T09:10:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T09:10:07","slug":"manchester-research-leads-to-nice-recommendation-for-lynch-syndrome-screening-for-womb-cancer-patients-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/saint-marys\/manchester-research-leads-to-nice-recommendation-for-lynch-syndrome-screening-for-womb-cancer-patients-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Manchester research leads to NICE recommendation for Lynch syndrome screening for womb cancer patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Women diagnosed with womb cancer should now be routinely screened for the genetic condition Lynch syndrome (LS), following a <\/span>new guideline issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (NICE).<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The guideline, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/DG42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diagnostic Guidance 42 (DG42)<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, was issued as a direct result of pioneering research led by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (MFT) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The University of Manchester<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (UoM) researchers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/emma.crosbie.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Emma Crosbie<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/gareth.d.evans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Gareth Evans<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and former MFT researcher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/researchers\/neil-ryan(ace49b7e-0e61-4c74-99a7-93044bec3bd7).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr Neil Ryan<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\">Lynch syndrome<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is an inherited cancer predisposition syndrome caused by a fault in a gene called a mismatch repair gene responsible for DNA repair. This faulty gene runs in families and means anyone with the condition carries a high risk of developing womb, bowel and other cancers. Around <\/span>one in three hundred people<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> are thought to have LS, with many unaware they have it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Under previous NICE guidance, routine testing was only recommended for patients diagnosed with bowel cancer, alongside testing for their family members. However, this will now be extended to women with womb cancer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Professor Crosbie, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at MFT\u2019s Saint Mary\u2019s Hospital and Professor of Gynaecological Oncology at UoM, said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16347\" src=\"https:\/\/mft.nhs.uk\/app\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Emma-Crosbie-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" \/>\u201cThis is fantastic news and a huge breakthrough for women\u2019s health. This new guideline means women with womb cancer and their families should have access to vital screening and treatments offered for other cancers related to Lynch syndrome.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis really was an unmet need and will go a long way to identifying more people with Lynch syndrome and identifying cancer early when it is more treatable. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re extremely proud that our team, based across Saint Mary\u2019s Hospital and The University of Manchester, was able to establish the body of evidence behind the change in guidance. We\u2019re also grateful to the hundreds of patients who, thanks to their participation in research, have made this possible.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If women test positive for LS, they will be routinely monitored for early signs of bowel and other cancers, and offered preventative treatments to reduce their risk of future cancers. Family members will also be tested and offered similar care and treatment if found to carry the syndrome.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Both Professor Crosbie and Professor Evans are researchers with the <\/span>NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre\u2019s<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (BRC) <\/span>Cancer Prevention and Early Detection theme<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> which aims to reduce the burden of common cancers on the general population, particularly those inherited through family members.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Professor Crosbie\u2019s Endometrial Cancer Research Team, based at Saint Mary\u2019s Hospital, has led numerous gynaecology studies on LS.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meindert Boysen, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of the Centre for Health Technology Evaluation at NICE, said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTesting people for Lynch syndrome after they\u2019ve been diagnosed with womb cancer will not only benefit the patient but it also has the potential to identify those family members with this genetic condition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis guidance could have a real impact on people\u2019s lives. By being identified as having Lynch syndrome, relatives will know they are at higher risk of gynaecological cancer which may also help them make decisions about family planning, which could mean starting a family earlier.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Professor Graham Lord, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at UoM, said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe publication of this new guideline is a critical step towards improving Lynch syndrome diagnoses, and for the prevention and early detection of womb, bowel, and many other cancers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAs a result of this work by Professors Emma Crosbie and Gareth Evans and Dr Neil Ryan, as many as 1,000 people per year will find out that they have heightened risk of developing these cancers, and will be able to join prevention and early detection programmes, and take other risk-reducing decisions, that will save many lives.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Athena Lamnisos, Chief Executive of gynaecological cancer charity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eveappeal.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Eve Appeal<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAs the CEO of a charity that\u2019s core mission is to make preventing cancer a reality, I couldn\u2019t ask for better news. Ultimately this is about reducing the number of people who may develop one of these devastating diseases in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cOffering womb cancer patients a test for Lynch syndrome means that more people will also be screened for bowel cancer. Crucially, it means that their families can be tested for this gene mutation which puts them at higher risk of cancer development, prior to the devastating news of a diagnosis allowing them to be vigilant and take action.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Genevieve Edwards, Chief Executive at charity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bowel Cancer UK<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis excellent decision will undoubtedly save lives from bowel and other cancers by identifying more people at risk through Lynch syndrome.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif';\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Professor Crosbie\u2019s team have also led research to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchesterbrc.nihr.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/urine-test-prevent-cervical-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">develop urine testing for cervical cancer<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchesterbrc.nihr.ac.uk\/news-and-events\/saint-marys-hospital-surgical-team-wins-national-award-cancer-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">received national recognition<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in 2019 for their recruitment to cancer trials.<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Women diagnosed with womb cancer should now be routinely screened for the genetic condition Lynch syndrome (LS), following a new guideline issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
