MFT aims to achieve the Association of UK University Hospitals' aspirational goal of 1% of the qualified NMAHP workforce working within a clinical academic role by 2030.
It will support clinical staff to develop their research in line with NIHR Research Career Pathways (Appendix 1) in order to help achieve this aim, as well as addressing national NMAHP research objectives. The hospitals/MCS comprising MFT have made considerable progress to advance clinical academic careers in the NHS. MFT has a growing number of NMAHP staff actively engaged in research. The number of research active NMAHP staff is relatively large compared to other healthcare organisations, however, these staff tend to be found in small clusters, rather than uniformly across the Trust, which reflects the historical, varying level of research activity between hospital sites and clinical divisions. The number of NMAHP staff currently engaged in NMAHP-led research activity can be seen in Table 1 (below). These figures exclude clinical research nurses, midwives and AHPs working to support clinical research work.

MFT NMAHP Research Fellowships
A three year programme (2017-2020) funded by MFT Charitable Trustees, which aims to:
- Invest in clinical research leaders to support delivery of the NMAHP Research Strategy commitment to ensure continuity and sustainability of research activity amongst NMAHPs
- Strengthen the existing infrastructure to support the creation of additional posts along the clinical academic pathway to increase the number of post-doctoral and senior clinical academic NMAHPs
- Support the continued development of a research culture to impact on practice within nursing, midwifery and allied health professional practice.
Fellowships are awarded at pre-doctoral and post-doctoral level along with fees only PhD funding for NMAHP Consultants.
Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Research Conference
The inaugural NMAHP Research Conference took place in May 2017 with over 150 Trust delegates. The conference will be an annual MFT event providing the opportunity to celebrate some of the NMAHP led research achievements and demonstrate how we are contributing to the development of new evidence within the professions.
NMAHP Research Unit Manchester Website and Social Media
A website to support MFT NMAHP research has been developed. The website holds information on NMAHP research activity, support and resources. It is intended to expand the website to provide a central point of communication, where staff and others can find all the relevant NMAHP research information that they need.
A Twitter account, @NMAHP_Research, has been established and has 272 followers from many different locations. Latest developments, initiatives and successes relevant to MFT NMAHP research are tweeted regularly.
A Multiprofessional Research YouTube Channel has been established. This contains video footage of NMAHP research lectures and events.
Consultant Posts as Clinical Academics
The Trust has 18 NMAHP Consultants. MFT enjoys board level commitment to support the development of senior NMAHP posts, protecting 50% non-clinical time for research, evaluation, professional leadership and consultancy. Consultants are encouraged to develop clinical academic careers and attract funding in partnership with HEIs. An NMAHP Consultants Forum has been established with Michelle Briggs, Professor of Nursing to provide mentorship and peer support.
NMAHP Professional Debates
A programme of MFT NMAHP Professional Debates has been launched with the first debating ‘Intentional rounding is a tick box exercise and a tea round’. The topic of intentional rounding attracted 70 nurses, midwives and nursing and midwifery students from across the Trust and was well received.
