Our History<\/h2>\n

Withington Community Hospital has had a long and varied history. The original building was once the Chorlton Union Workhouse, built between 1854 and 1855. In 1864 to 1866, it was converted into a hospital for the poor. \u00a0Five hospital blocks or \u2018pavilions\u2019, designed by Thomas Worthington, were constructed. It was the first institution to adopt the ‘pavilion system’, which was considered a significant advancement in healthcare architecture.<\/p>\n

During the First World War, it provided support for the military and German prisoners of war were housed there.<\/p>\n

At its height, the original hospital was the largest teaching hospital in Europe due to its affiliation with The University of Manchester.<\/p>\n

Following a decision in the late 1980s to have only one hospital serving South Manchester, many services were transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital. Some of the original buildings were now redundant and have since been transformed into homes. Three of the former hospital buildings are Grade II listed, due to their historic importance.<\/p>\n

A new, purpose-built hospital was constructed opposite the old site, and the current Withington Community Hospital was officially opened by Princess Anne in September 2005.[\/vc_column_text]\n \n \n <\/svg>Top<\/span>\n<\/a>\n[vc_separator color=”blue” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

Our Services<\/h2>\n

We currently see around 155,000 patients in our clinics and departments every year. Our main specialisms include Dermatology, Urology, Audiology, ENT and Therapies. Withington Community Hospital is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1 October 2017 and is responsible for running a family of ten hospitals across seven separate sites.
