Our History<\/h2>\n

Wythenshawe Hospital is built on the site of Baguley Sanatorium. The Sanatorium opened on 4 October 1902 to lead the way in the fight against a huge tuberculosis spike in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Towards the end of the 1930s, the concept of an all-encompassing Wythenshawe Hospital was first discussed. However, the Second World War arrived, and Baguley Sanatorium was repurposed to house civilian war casualties from around the area as an EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Hospital.<\/p>\n

It was here that burned soldiers were treated, and Baguley pioneered some of the very first instances of what we now know to be plastic surgery and reconstruction. This was the foundation of the hospital’s specialisation in burns and plastic surgery and later, in 1969, the Plastic Surgery Unit fully transferred to a purpose-built unit at Withington Hospital.<\/p>\n

When Baguley Hospital became part of the NHS in 1948, many of the wards built during the war were empty. These were later reopened as Wythenshawe Hospital. Baguley Hospital remained a chest hospital devoted to the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis until it closed in 1975, when it merged with Wythenshawe Hospital.<\/p>\n

The 1970s and 1980s saw Wythenshawe Hospital continue its evolution into one of the busiest hospitals in the North West.<\/p>\n

The first ever heart transplant was performed by surgeons at Wythenshawe Hospital in 1987 and, in 1993, Princess Margaret opened a dedicated transplant centre at the Hospital.<\/p>\n

This century has seen the establishment of The North West Lung Centre and a purpose-built cystic fibrosis unit.[\/vc_column_text]\n \n \n <\/svg>Top<\/span>\n<\/a>\n[vc_separator color=”blue” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

Our fields of specialist expertise include cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, respiratory conditions, burns and plastics, cancer and breast care services. We not only service the people of South Manchester, but also help patients from across the North West and beyond.<\/p>\n

We are recognised in the region and nationally for the quality of our teaching, research and development. Wythenshawe Hospital is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1 October 2017 and is responsible for running a family of ten hospitals across seven separate sites.
