Manchester\u2019s recently launched Lung Health Checks have been shortlisted for Cancer Care Initiative of the Year at the Patient Safety Awards 2019.<\/p>\n
Launched on 25 March, the project will tackle poor early diagnosis and survival rates for lung cancer by providing quick, easily accessible screenings for those deemed at higher risk of lung conditions. The initiative is managed by Wythenshawe Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and delivered in partnership with Manchester Health and Care Commissioning (MHCC), Cobalt, and Siemens Healthineers.<\/p>\n
From this month (April 2019), Lung Health Check support units and CT vehicles will be placed in key community-based locations across North and East Manchester for the next two years. The first-of-their-kind mobile units will utilise ultra low-dose CT scanners, meaning tests can be carried out quickly, and in easily accessible areas in the community.<\/p>\n
Dr Richard Booton, Clinical Director of Lung Cancer and Thoracic Surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital, said: \u201cTo have been shortlisted for this award so shortly after the launch of our Lung Health Checks speaks volumes about the confidence that health experts have in the initiative\u2019s value to the local community. Thanks to new technology and an innovative approach to screening, we anticipate this new service will help us identify lung cancers more quickly, more easily, and earlier in their development than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n
