Dr Andrew Fletcher
Consultant Paediatrician
Great North Children’s Hospital
Having completed an elective in the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, I planned to be a paediatric haematologist early in my career. However, it took almost 20 years with training in Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds, and three consultant posts, before this was realised.
Working as an adult haematologist in Chesterfield and Hull I have developed interests in myeloid malignancies, teenage and young adult care and laboratory medicine.
In Hull I spent four years as Clinical Director of the Pathology and Infection Service and completed an MBA centred on this as the COVID pandemic evolved. My dissertation has focused on defining innovation, and the need for networks to foster creativity, discuss, diffuse and deliver innovation across the NHS.
COVID enabled me to spend time assessing children with the ID team I managed and allowed me to reassess career options and I returned to paediatrics in Birmingham Children’s hospital developing non-malignant and consultative services. Through understanding the complex systems of patients and their laboratory assessment I enjoy the challenges of integrating care between teams and departments and the opportunities for development here in Northeast are endless.
