Biography:
Dr John Grainger is a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, where he serves as the local paediatric lead for non malignant haematology. His clinical portfolio spans bleeding disorders, sickle cell, thrombosis, and early phase clinical trials, with a strong focus on improving outcomes for children with complex haematological conditions.
At a regional level, Dr Grainger is the Chair of the North West Sickle Cell Network, providing strategic leadership to enhance and harmonise care for patients across the region. Nationally, he plays a prominent role within the British Society for Haematology, currently serving as Chair of the External Affairs Committee and previously as Chair of the Paediatric Haematology Committee.
Dr Grainger is recognised as the national lead for paediatric Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) and for paediatric haematology training, contributing to national standards, education, and service development in these areas. He is also a member of several NHS England Clinical Reference Groups (CRGs), including haemoglobinopathy and specialist blood disorders, and represents haematology on the Women and Children’s CRG, helping to shape policy and service design at a national level.
With a career defined by clinical excellence, leadership, and advocacy, Dr Grainger continues to influence paediatric haematology practice regionally and nationally, ensuring that children and families receive high quality, evidence based care.
