Getting to the hospital

We strongly recommend using active travel or public transport to get to Wythenshawe Hospital. The car parks are often busy, and parking is often oversubscribed. All our hospitals are served by many bus routes and other community and sustainable transport options.

For information about public transport services please contact Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) on 0161 244 1000. Their lines are open between 7.00 am and 8.00 pm on Monday to Friday, and from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm on weekends and bank holidays, you can also visit their website.

Walk

Walking is an excellent, low cost, way to get some exercise into a busy schedule. Whether you’re walking the whole way, to a bus stop, Metrolink or train station, the steps add up. Plan your route on the TfGM journey planner.

Cycle

Wythenshawe Hospital is located in a suburban area with many parks nearby, so you may find it a pleasant experience to cycle to the hospital. We have cycle racks to lock your bike up across the hospital site. Please note, all users leave their bikes at their own risk and the Trust is not liable for stolen or damaged bikes.

Bus

Wythenshawe Hospital is well served by buses, and six regular services stop at the Hospital lay-by.

Community transport

Local Link is a service which allows passengers within certain areas of Greater Manchester to book door-to-door journeys. Please visit the Local Link TfGM website for more information.

Park and Ride

We recognise that people come from all over Manchester to our hospitals, and access by car can often be difficult. We have a ‘Park and Ride’ service that links Wythenshawe and the Oxford Road hospitals.

The buses run Monday-Friday (not including UK bank holidays). Staff travel free with a valid Trust ID badge. Patients and visitors can use the service for £1 (cash only) during off-peak hours (10.30 am-3.00 pm).

Wythenshawe Shuttle Times

The Wythenshawe-Oxford Road Shuttle bus departs from the bus layby between Entrance 5 and 6 at Wythenshawe Hospital and at the bus stop located opposite St Mary’s Hospital on the Boulevard, Oxford Road Campus.

Train

Our nearest railway stations are Manchester Airport, Navigation Road and Altrincham. These are a short walk, cycle, or bus ride from Wythenshawe Hospital.

Tram

Wythenshawe is close to the Metrolink ‘blue’ line, and the nearest tram stop is at Roundthorn, which is a five minute walk from the centre of the Hospital.

We currently have no public facilities for electric vehicle charging at Wythenshawe Hospital.

If you have any accessibility enquiries or special requirements such as help with visual impairment, hearing, language, or communication matters, please ask a member of staff for assistance or contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) The PALS team can provide information about NHS services and other sources of help such as Citizen’s Advice Bureau and support you through an anxious time. They also give a voice to patients’ issues, help to identify gaps in services and report to the Trust Board. Transport for Sick Children is a registered charity working throughout Greater Manchester and helping children to reach their hospital appointments.

• Travel vouchers

Travel vouchers are for people who are not able to use ordinary buses, trains or Metrolink and have serious walking difficulties or are registered blind. They can be used to pay for taxis and for travel on accessible bus services such as Ring and Ride and Community transport. • Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS)

If you’re referred to hospital or other NHS premises for specialist NHS treatment or diagnostic tests by a doctor, dentist or another primary care health professional, you may be able to claim a refund of reasonable travel costs under the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS).
