About Us
The Trafford Diabetes Team run clinics for people with diabetes at Trafford General Hospital, Altrincham General Hospital and Stretford Memorial Hospital. Please note access to these clinics is not possible for people with diabetes who have their care provided solely by their General Practitioner and Practice Nurse. Your GP can make a referral to the hospital if he/she thinks it is appropriate.

Our Team
Dr W P Stephens
Bill Stephens is Consultant Physician responsible for Diabetes care in Trafford since 1985. He qualified in 1972 from Westminster Hospital Medical School and has worked in Manchester since 1978. His research interest is in the therapeutics of Diabetes Mellitus.
He led the development of the new Trafford Diabetes Centre, including the successful fund-raising appeal for £250,000 towards the cost of the Centre. He led Trafford to the runner-up spot in the ‘Diabetes Team of the Year Award’ in 2007. He is President of the local branch of Diabetes UK and has taken part in many charitable events raising money for Diabetes UK, such as The Great North Run.
Dr A George
Dr George completed his medical training at the Christian Medical College, Vellore in Southern India where his interest in Diabetes developed due to the high prevalence of the condition in that area. In the year 2000, he moved to the South of England to continue his training in Diabetes and Endocrinology and undertake research projects in relation to Diabetic kidney disease and future treatments for Diabetes.
He hopes to initiate a clinic for people with early Diabetic kidney disease together with Dr Donne, a Consultant Nephrologist from Hope Hospital, Salford. He has also set up an additional Diabetic clinic at Stretford Memorial Hospital to review patients as appropriate and take on his own caseload of patients within the Thursday morning Diabetic clinic at Trafford General Hospital.
Dr Clare Adamson
Clare Adamson is an Associate Specialist staff in diabetes. She trained at Manchester University, qualifying as a doctor in 1992. Since then she has worked extensively in diabetes, which has included working at Hope Hospital and Sheffield University Hospital. She has conducted research into some of the problems experienced by people with diabetes. She came to Trafford in April 2000 where she has helped to set up and run the services including the Trafford Diabetic Foot Ulcer Service.
Dr Clive Marchi
Clive Marchi is a hospital practitioner in diabetes. He qualified from the University of St Andrews in 1980, University of Manchester 1983. He is a GP in Sale, running his own diabetic service from there. Clive has been a hospital practitioner to the diabetic clinic for 17 years.
Sister Louise Hopewell
Louise Hopewell has been a Diabetes Specialist Nurse in Trafford since 1992, caring for children, young people and adults who have diabetes. She qualified from Park Hospital as a State Registered Nurse in 1980 and as a Registered Sick Childrens Nurse from Booth Hall Childrens Hospital in 1990.
She graduated from Salford University in 2002 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Nursing Studies relating to diabetes. She has more recently organised and delivered the T1IDE (Trafford Type 1 Intensive Diabetes Education) programme and has been heavily involved in fundraising and establishing the infrastructure for the new Diabetes Centre.
Sister Diane Morrison
Diane Morrison has worked as a Diabetes Nurse for nine years working mainly in North Trafford. Her particular interests in diabetes are the implementation of diet and exercise classes for people with Type 2 diabetes and providing consultation for men experiencing problems with erectile dysfunction. Before becoming a Diabetes Nurse, Diane worked as a ward sister on a medical ward at Trafford General Hospital where she also completed her nurse training.
Sister Nuala Rushton
Nuala Rushton qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1983 and came into post as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse in 1998. Prior to she worked at Trafford General Hospital as a ward sister on a general medical ward specialising in caring for people with diabetes.
The majority of Nuala’s work is carried out caring for people with diabetes and doing clinics in South Trafford.
Sister Tricia Bercik
Tricia is a Diabetes Nurse responsible for looking after elderly people with diabetes. After qualifying as an Enrolled Nurse from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1979, Tricia came to Trafford General Hospital in 1988 to complete her EN/RGN conversion course. Tricia liked the people and the environment so much that she did not return to her southern roots.
Tricia worked as a junior sister on an elderly care ward before taking up her current post, which she have been doing for six years. Her role includes developing the diabetes service for elderly people, especially those who are housebound or reside within a residential or nursing home. She also have a responsibility to improve diabetes awareness amongst carers.
Clare Collier BSc (Hons) SRCH
Clare graduated from the University of Central England in 1998. She completed a one month placement at the School of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. Her special interest is in the diabetic foot and she is a member of the Northwest Clinical Effectiveness Group for peripheral vascular disease and podiatry.
Helen Whittaker
Helen has been working as a dietician at Trafford General Hospital since 1994. After qualifying in Leeds, she worked in Rochdale and at Leighton Hospital in Crewe before coming to a senior post at Trafford. Helen is currently responsible for providing dietary education and advice to the children, young people and adults who attend the diabetic review clinics. She also runs an exercise group for people with type 2 diabetes with the aim of increasing their activity levels.
Brenda Purnell
Brenda is the dietetic lead for diabetes in Trafford and has been a specialist in diabetes for over fifteen years. Brenda is a national adviser to Diabetes UK and the Department of Health. Her interests include educational approaches and learning for individuals with diabetes, and enabling people to succeed with weight management. She works mainly with GP practice staff as part of the primary care specialist diabetes team.
Louise McDaid BSc (Hons) HPC reg. Clinical Lead Podiatrist
Louise graduated from the University of Salford in 2001, and joined Trafford in August 2002. She is a clinical specialist in the diabetic foot, with postgraduate qualifications in diabetes from the University of Warwick and Masters Level Module from the University of Salford.
She is Chair of the North West Podiatry Clinical Effectiveness Group for Peripheral Vascular Disease and works jointly as Clinical Lead Podiatrist at Trafford General Hospital, caring for high-risk diabetic patients both in the outpatient setting and on the wards.
Lynne Bryant
Lynne is secretary to the diabetes team.
