The services we offer include:

• Day-case surgery – more than 95 per cent of day-case patients are well enough to go home on the day of their operation
• Consultant outpatient clinics
• Nurse-led stoma, hospital and home care support

The Surgical Unit is situated on the ground floor of Trafford General Hospital. The ward has 20 beds (two eight-bedded bays and four single rooms). Our dedicated, professional ward staff provide 24-hour nursing care.

The services we offer include inpatient care for both emergency and elective major surgical procedures, minor day case surgery, consultant outpatient clinics and nurse lead stoma, hospital and home care support.

The surgical unit is situated on the first floor of Trafford General Hospital. The ward comprises of 20 beds, two eight bedded bays and four single rooms. Our dedicated, professional surgical nursing staff provides twenty-four hour nursing care.

Clinics

Surgical outpatient clinics

The outpatient clinics are situated at the front of the hospital. We provide outpatient facilities for a full range of surgical problems. There are 9-10 clinic sessions per week. Referrals to our clinics are through your GP or fellow consultants within the hospital. Each clinic has a lead clinician and you will be met by experienced outpatient clinic nurses who will advice you on waiting times and any other related enquiries.

Pre-op clinic

For any elective surgery to be performed it is important that every patent attend a pre-op clinic. The clinic is situated on the Orthopaedic Unit on the ground floor of the hospital. An appointment will be made for you a week or so prior to your surgery, your attendance for this assessment is very important to ensure there are no underlying problems prior to surgery and to give you the opportunity to ask any questions that maybe concerning you or your family. Information leaflets on your forthcoming surgery will be given to you by your pre-op nurse for you to take home and read at your leisure.

Any queries regarding your surgery, prior to admission please ring 0161 746 2112 at any time a trained member of staff will be happy to assist you in your enquiries. Please be aware failure to attend this clinic could put your surgery at risk.

It is important to all the surgical team, doctors, nurses and support staff that the care you have received has been of the highest quality, delivered in a professional manner in a clean safe environment.

Concerns

Any concerns or worries you or your family may have should be referred to the unit manager Sr. Philippa Knight. Alternatively the Patient Advice and Liaison Service is contactable either through the nursing staff or by phoning 0161 746 2019.

Discharge

Please discuss any of your discharge concerns with your nurse or doctor prior to your discharge day; ensure all questions are answered to your satisfaction. Make sure you have any prescriptions needed and you have transport home.

Visiting hours and food service

Visiting hours are between 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Please be aware that patient meal times are protected. It is important that our patients can eat meals without being disturbed, as it is an important part of their treatment, and recuperation.

• Breakfast is served between 7.30am and 9am
• Lunch between 12.15pm and 1.30pm
• Dinner between 4.30 and 5.30pm

Menus are distributed to all inpatients. Specialised diets are catered for and the hospital maintains a staff of registered dieticians to meet specific dietary needs.

Non-smoking Trust

Prior to admission please speak to either your GP or pre-op nurse if you smoke as this is a tobacco free trust, and it might be helpful for you to obtain Nicotine Replacement Patches or a referral to Smoking Cessation Nurse.

The ward is staffed by a dedicated team of nurses, healthcare assistants, housekeeper, ward clerk, and domestics.  They are supported by colleagues from other specialties including physiotherapy.

Each clinic has a lead clinician and you will be met by experienced nurses who will advise you on waiting times and any other related enquiries.

All pre-op clinics take place on the ground floor of Trafford General, alongside the Orthopaedic Outpatients Unit.  An appointment will be made for you to attend the clinic a week or so before your surgery.  It is very important that you attend this assessment to ensure there are no underlying problems before your surgery and to give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Your pre-op nurse will also provide you with information leaflets on your forthcoming surgery for you to take home and read at your leisure.
