Dr Elhag graduated from The University of Khartoum (established 1924 as Kitchener school of Medicine). Completed her medical training in Saudi Arabia. She then consolidated her experience by working as a senior clinical fellow in haematology in Nottingham University City Hospital.
She completed her specialist haematology training in the Northwest region and took up her consultant job at Manchester Royal Infirmary within the MFT Haemoglobinopathy Service (Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre, HCC).
