I graduated from Sheffield University Medical School along with a special honours BSc degree in Human Biology and Anatomy .My postgraduate training was in Manchester initially , then at University and Imperial Colleges London. I was awarded my MD with distinction in 1989 for my research as a Registrar at the Royal Brompton Hospital. and Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology the National Heart and Lung Institute. In 1988. I became the first Senior Registrar in Paediatric and Adult cardiology at Wessex Tertiary Cardiothoracic Centre, Southampton.
In 1991 I became Consultant Cardiologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary. My clinical work encompassed, and still does, all aspects of cardiology including pacing, arrhythmias, structural and congenital heart disease. I have subspecialised even further over the last 20 years and I lead the maternal and women’s cardiology service for the North West, based with colleagues in St Mary’s Hospital Manchester . I also deliver the training for this subject as part of the European Society of Human Genetics teaching module and am one of the 4 Cardiology assessors for the national (MBBRACE-UK) confidential maternity enquiry. I was awarded honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for this work in 2013.

As a qualified instrument rated pilot I have a particular expertise in aviation cardiology ; I work closely with the UK Civil Aviation Authority and have been a member of the UKCAA Medical Advisory panel. I was made a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical. Society for this work.

In 2010 I was appointed to the post of Manchester Academic Health Science Chair in Clinical Cardiology at Manchester University. I have held the post of Group Associate Medical Director at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2015. I I was previously an assessor for CQC and am a performance assessor for the GMC. I had previously been training programme director for NW cardiology trainees.
