Biography
Dr Maria del Carmen Mascareno Ponte is a Consultant in Sleep and Ventilation Medicine at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and has worked within the specialty since 2014. She completed subspecialist training in Sleep Medicine and Long-Term Ventilation at the University Hospital of South Manchester and was appointed Consultant in 2018. She holds European Somnologist certification through the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS).
She is Lead of the Sleep Service and specialises in the diagnosis and management of complex sleep and ventilation disorders, including obstructive and central sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, insomnia, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, and neuromuscular respiratory disease. She has particular expertise in CPAP therapy, non-invasive ventilation (NIV), and adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV).
Dr Mascareno Ponte runs regular joint Neurology–Respiratory clinics for patients with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and other neuromuscular disorders. She is actively involved in service development, medical education, and training within Sleep and Ventilation Medicine.
