Dr Chris Kosmidis is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Director of the National Aspergillosis Centre (NAC) at Wythenshawe Hospital, the UK’s highly specialised service for the diagnosis and management of aspergillosis. In parallel with his NHS clinical leadership, he holds a Senior Lecturer appointment at the University of Manchester, where he contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate education in infection, immunity and respiratory medicine.
Clinical Leadership and Practice
Dr Kosmidis leads the clinical service for patients affected by aspergillosis, encompassing invasive, chronic pulmonary and allergic forms of the disease. He manages a high-volume outpatient clinic and inpatient service, provides specialist infectious disease expertise across the Trust’s hospitals, and offers national clinical advice for complex fungal and other infection presentations. His clinical remit also includes infection management in immunocompromised individuals, respiratory infections, tuberculosis and sepsis.
As Clinical Director of the NAC, Dr Kosmidis oversees this national service’s strategy, delivery and quality standards, ensuring comprehensive care pathways and access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for patients from across the UK.
Academic and Research Contributions
Dr Kosmidis’ academic work focuses on improving the understanding and management of fungal diseases, particularly chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. His research interests include disease pathogenesis, biomarkers and point-of-care diagnostics, immunotherapy strategies such as interferon-gamma, and robust patient-reported outcome measures to assess treatment response. He is a principal investigator on multidisciplinary research projects and has contributed widely to peer-reviewed literature in infectious diseases and medical mycology.
He is actively involved in national and international collaborations, including with the Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis Network (CPAnet) and the Manchester Fungal Infection Group, helping to drive research priorities and promote evidence-based improvements in care.
Education and Mentorship
In his academic role at the University of Manchester, Dr Kosmidis teaches across clinical and scientific programmes, supervises medical students, and serves as an academic adviser. He supports curriculum development and contributes to training initiatives that prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals in infection and respiratory medicine.
Qualifications
Dr Kosmidis completed his medical training at Semmelweis University School of Medicine and holds a PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School. He trained in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases in Greece and the United States and holds specialist registration in Infectious Diseases.
