Biography

Nicola is an Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon based at the Nightingale Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital. She graduated from The University of Manchester in 1998 and completed her Higher Surgical Training in the North West of England. In 2004, she was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons of England (Frances & Augustus Newman) Research Fellowship. She subsequently completed her research MD at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research and The University of Manchester. Her MD thesis, titled “Factors Affecting the Growth and Progression of Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), with Special Reference to Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression (2008)” helped look at advancing the understanding of breast cancer biology. Nicola became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2012 and completed a National TIG Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in Liverpool in 2013. She has been a Consultant Breast Surgeon at Wythenshawe Hospital since 2014.

In addition to her clinical role, Nicola currently serves as Clinical Director of Patient Access across Theatres and Outpatient Services at WTWA. She is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at The University of Manchester and co-Lead for Breast Diseases teaching on the MB ChB programme. She is actively involved in medical education, regularly teaching undergraduate medical students about breast disease and postgraduate surgical trainees on breast surgery techniques. Nicola has previously held the role of Clinical Director of Breast Surgery and contributes to Greater Manchester Cancer improvement initiatives.

Nicola is particularly passionate about improving quality-of-life outcomes for patients following breast cancer treatment. Her special interests include the management of endocrine therapy side effects and working collaboratively with colleagues, she has helped to develop educational programmes for healthcare professionals and, with grant funding support, established a pilot endocrine therapy side-effects clinic in Greater Manchester.
