What is Same Day Emergency Care?

Same day emergency care (SDEC) is one of the many ways the NHS is working to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time for patients.

Under this care model, patients presenting at hospital with relevant conditions can be rapidly assessed, diagnosed, and treated without being admitted to a ward, and if clinically safe to do so, will go home the same day their care is provided. SDEC aims to benefit both patients and the healthcare system by reducing waiting times and hospital admissions, where appropriate.

Wythenshawe SDEC Opening Hours

Monday to Sunday 08:00-20:00.

Visitors – Patients are entitled to bring one visitor with them to the SDEC Unit.

How does SDEC work at Wythenshawe Hospital?

Patients can be referred to SDEC treatment through different routes, including:

  • Following streaming or triage in emergency departments (EDs)
  • Direct referral from GPs
  • Direct referral from NHS 111

The SDEC unit provides specialist consultant and advanced clinical practitioner- led care for patients. When you arrive at SDEC please report to the receptionist who will book you in. Shortly following your arrival, a nurse will assess you by taking your temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen levels and weight. Depending on your condition, you may also need to have blood tests, heart tracing (ECG), x-rays and urine tests. Please be aware, you many need additional tests (MRI, ultrasound, or CT) which could mean that you are in the department for several hours. As we have a larger number of patient than assessment areas, you may be asked to wait in the waiting room for results whilst other patients are being reviewed.

Following your appointment, you will either be:

  • Discharged
  • Admitted as an Emergency

In some instances, you may be asked to return to SDEC for another appointment for ongoing or repeat investigations. One of our ward clerks will contact you the night before your appointment date to confirm your time slot.

If your condition deteriorates you must contact your GP or attend the Emergency Department.

If you do not attend your appointment without informing us, we will telephone you on the phone number in your medical records and inform your GP that you did not attend. This is done as a safeguarding measure to ensure that you are well.
