The dermatology team at Manchester Foundation Trust run clinics across four hospitals:
- Altrincham Hospital
- Trafford Hospital
- Wythenshawe Hospital
- Withington Hospital
The dermatology department utilises Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help screen patients referred into the service on a suspected cancer pathway. AI takes photographs of the lesion(s) to assist the service in understanding the next steps required for a patient. The AI tele dermatology service is available at Altrincham and Withington Hospital and is only eligible for patients that fit the AI criteria.
Outpatient appointments are offered at all four hospitals and provide a face to face consultation with our clinicians to discuss the next steps required in their pathway.
Patients may require a tissue (biopsy) sample to determine diagnosis. If this procedure is suitable in a dermatology setting, the minor skin surgery can take place at one of the four hospitals.
Altrincham Hospital is the site of our specialist Skin Cancer Hub where patients can have an AI appointment, outpatient consultation and skin surgery in a single visit, reducing the number of appointments patients need to attend.
Treatments Provided
The results of the tissue sample (biopsy) determine the different treatment options available to patients.
Patients may be discussed at our Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Meeting (MDT) to consider the best and most effective treatment plan.
Depending on diagnosis patients may be referred to another service for further treatment or surgery. This may include a referral to the Plastic Surgery Department at Wythenshawe Hospital for further surgery or a referral to The Christies Hospital for further surgery or other specialist services.
Cryotherapy may be a treatment option which is a minimally-invasive treatment that freezes skin surface lesions using extremely cold liquid
