Biography
Clare graduated in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1990 and trained in paediatrics in Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool, and sub-specialised in respiratory medicine at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. She completed an MD at the University of Manchester on “Environmental allergens and childhood asthma” in 2002. She has worked as a consultant at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital since 2003. Clare gained a HEFE clinical fellowship in 2007, became a senior lecturer with the University of Manchester in 2012 and was promoted to professor of paediatric respiratory medicine in 2021.
As a consultant she now focuses on severe asthma and leads the service for Greater Manchester, Lancashire and south Cumbria. She has been severe asthma advisor for the GM Strategic Clinical Network CYP asthma group, set up the regional severe asthma transition service and has recently set up a regional virtual severe asthma MDT.
Clare continues to be active in research. She has been actively involved in the Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study for over 20 years (a large birth cohort investigating risk factors for the development of asthma and allergy) and has been chief investigator since 2015. Amongst other research projects she is chief investigator for a large observational study (RADicA) investigating asthma diagnostic pathways and novel asthma diagnostic tests. She has been an active member of the regional clinical research network and was paediatric research lead for over 10 years promoting children’s research across the region. She is principal investigator on a number of academic and industry led studies at RMCH. She has over 150 peer reviewed publications.
