Biography

Professor Rowland has over two decades of national leadership experience and expertise. He works at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Paediatrician with special interest in child protection and looked after children clinical work. He is also Honorary Professor (Children’s Rights, Law, and Advocacy) at the University of Salford.

Professor Rowland is a Senior Fellow of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management; a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health; a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators; a Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine; and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has also been awarded a Fellowship by The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (now The Churchill Fellowship) and won the Pol Roger Prize for his Fellowship, Living on a Railway Line. His awards also include the Association Medal of the British Medical Association in recognition of his distinguished service to the Association and his contribution to medicine; and the Gold Decoration of Honour of the European Union of Medical Specialists in recognition of his dedicated work for European Medical Specialists. He has received a “Your Nottingham Alumni Award” from the University of Nottingham in recognition of his charity work and, in particular, his work towards promoting and protecting children’s rights; and he has been awarded Honorary Membership of the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty’s way of honouring those who have made a significant contribution to the science, literature or practice of public health.

Professor Rowland was appointed as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in His Majesty King Charles III’s 2025 Birthday Honours in recognition of his Services to Safeguarding and the Protection of Children’s Rights. He is also a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Greater Manchester, Commissioned by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.
