Biography

Dr Hutchings is a Dean’s Prize Fellow and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Manchester. He earned his medical degree from the University of Birmingham, undertook junior doctor rotations in Oxford, then moved to Manchester to train as an academic cardiologist. His PhD was funded by a BHF clinical research training fellowship.

In his clinical role as a Cardiologist Dr Hutchings subspecialises in inherited cardiac conditions and cardiac MRI. His research focuses on the mechanisms underlying the rhythm of the heart and how these go awry in pro-arrhythmic conditions such as channelopathies and cardiomyopathies. In particular his interest is in Calcium (Ca2+) handling in the heart and its manipulation with novel treatments. Dr Hutchings especially enjoys relating his research to treating patients.

Outside work, he enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his young family and wife.
