‘Cardiology’ refers to medicine involving the heart and ‘Cardiothoracic Surgery’ to surgery involving both the heart and wider chest area including the lungs.
Transplantation of both heart and lungs is one aspect of cardiothoracic surgery and this is performed at only five specialised centres in the UK including MFT.
MFT has one of the largest cardiothoracic departments in the country. We are one of only two centres in the UK to provide heart and lung surgery, transplant, and specialized respiratory ECMO (extra corporeal membrane oxygenation) under one roof. We carry out around 1,100 major heart and lung operations every year, of which 460 are lung cancer operations, placing us among the top five hospitals in the UK for these procedures. Further specific information about lung/respiratory conditions can be found here.
You might be referred to us by your GP for investigation and management of a heart condition, consideration for surgery, or after an emergency attendance at A&E with heart problems. We provide diagnosis and treatment for a range of heart problems including arrhythmia, congenital and ischemic heart disease, heart failure, hypertension and valve disorders.
The North West Heart Centre and The North West Centre for Lung Surgery
The North West Heart Centre at MFT’s Wythenshawe Hospital is one of the UK’s top cardiac centres, providing specialist cardiac services to 3.2 million people. The Centre, which opened in spring 2008, was the first in the north of England to offer cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI), and scans thousands of NHS patients every year.
A new 26-bed Critical Care Ward has replaced the previous cardiothoracic Intensive Care and High Dependency Units. All outpatient appointments now take place in a new outpatients unit with 20 consulting rooms and an integrated cardiac diagnostic suite.
We have a long history of collecting and analysing surgical data and were one of the first hospitals to publish surgeon-specific survival rates. Surgeons at the hospital played a key role in the move to publicise cardiac survival rates by the Healthcare Commission.
The North West Centre for Lung Surgery at MFT is one of the country’s leading centres for thoracic surgery to the lungs and wider chest area. The largest proportion of work is lung surgery for both malignancy (cancer) and benign (non-cancerous) conditions. Our surgeons perform the highest proportion of surgery for lung cancer nationally and most of our patients undergoing thoracic surgery are admitted under an Enhanced Recovery Programme, which speeds up recovery after surgery.
The North West Centre for Lung Surgery is based in the same building as the North West Heart Centre, where all surgical operations are performed. The transplant unit adjoins this building. We work closely with colleagues at the North West Lung Centre at MFT, which specialises in respiratory medicine and research.
