Biography
Stella Smith is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with a trauma background. She has a dedicated interest in abdominal wall reconstruction (surgery for large hernias). She gained a wealth of experience managing patients with an open abdomen following trauma during her fellowships. She has now been a consultant for 10 years and has a large AWR practice, along with inflammatory bowel disease.
She provided clinical leadership during the restructuring of the major trauma service in Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2019. She holds national roles in trauma surgery. Following the Manchester Arena Attack in 2017, she set up multi-professional training courses with colleagues and established Manchester Advanced Trauma Training, a trauma training charity.
Stella is the current President of the British Hernia Society. She was heavily involved in setting up the British Hernia Society Registry to capture data to improve patient care, which went live in November 2024. As a thought-leader in trauma and hernia surgery, she is frequently invited to present nationally and internationally. Stella has an active research interest and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer for Queen Mary, University of London.
