Biography
Professor Crean undertook medical training at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. He graduated in 1992 with degrees in molecular biology and medicine. He certified in Internal Medicine (MRCP) in 1996 before undergoing specialty training in Radiology in Edinburgh for four years, followed by two more years of focused training in cardiac imaging in Cambridge. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists UK in 2001 and received accreditation as a Specialist in Radiology (CCST) in 2002.
Prof. Crean spent an additional five years as a resident in Cardiology in Leeds, UK. One year of this time was spent at Toronto General Hospital where he did a Fellowship in Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT. He also had formal training in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) at Leeds General Infirmary and later in London at both St Thomas’ Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital. He received accreditation as a Specialist in Cardiology in 2008.
Prof. Crean joined the staff of Toronto General Hospital in 2008, cross-appointed to the Division of Cardiology and Department of Medical Imaging, and remained there until 2016. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014 and received several faculty teaching awards while on staff. He was an integral member of the ACHD and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) teams and read all modalities of cardiac imaging, although cardiac MRI was – and remains – his first love! During this time he also established the first dedicated service for adults with congenital or inflammatory coronary anomalies in Canada.
At the start of 2016 he was appointed to the Sanghvi Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Imaging within the Division of Cardiology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He was also a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where he contributed to the Clinical Congenital Heart Disease and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Services.
He moved back to Canada in 2018 as Director of the Cardiac MR service at the Ottawa Heart Institute. He also directed the HCM and ACHD services until moving to Manchester in 2023. He is now appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist and Chair in Rare, Inherited and Congenital Cardiac Conditions at the University of Manchester.
