Biography
Professor Williams was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2005 after training in Cardiology in Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool. He also has a specialist interest in cardiology and cancer (cardio-oncology) and holds an appointment at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. He well known for his approachability and being able to put patients at ease.
Prof Williams is a past Chair of the British Society for Heart Failure (BSH), the national professional charity for heart failure, having sat on the board over a 10 year period. He is also an ex board member of British Cardiac Society (BCS). He sits on the board as a Cardiology advisor at UK motorsport.
Prof Williams also has a research interest in heart failure with over 130 peer reviewed journal publications and is an honorary Professor at the University of Manchester. He frequently gives invited lectures at national and international conferences and was the Clinical Expert on NICE technology appraisals for heart failure medications, Ivabradine (2010), Sacubitril-Valsartan (2016) and Empagliflozin (2021).
He sits on several national panels advising health policy including the NHS long term plan (heart failure and valve disease) and advised NICE and NHS England during the COVD pandemic. He is co-author of the 2020 British Heart Foundation (BHF) document “Heart Failure: a blueprint for change”.
He is a supporter of Manchester United and Altrincham FC and enjoys skiing and running.
