Our service

The lung cancer team at MRI test for and diagnose patients for suspected lung cancer including pleural malignancy which is cancer affecting the lining of the lungs.

The tests we offer here at MRI include:

  • CT scans
  • PET-CT scans (a more detailed scan)
  • Endoscopy procedures and biopsies
  • Echocardiogram (heart scan)
  • breathing tests.

Once a patient has been found to have a lung cancer they are seen in our clinic and told the results of the tests.

They are then told the plans for treatment.  Patients are referred to other hospitals such as The Christie Hospital or Wythenshawe Hospital for treatment to cure or treat the cancer.

Treatments include:

  • Surgery
  • radiotherapy
  • drugs to treat cancer (chemotherapy).

Treatments provided

Most tests looking for lung cancer are done at Manchester Royal Infirmary. We may use other hospitals to take samples of lung tissue (called a biopsy) as this test is not done at MRI.

There are five Consultants in the team.

We provide a rapid service for patients referred by their GP for a CT Scan and this is run by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and a Physicians Associate.

There are four CNS (Cancer clinical nurse specialist) in the team and one cancer navigator (who arranges your tests and appointments).

We work at MRI.

Personalised cancer care

Patients with lung cancer have support from the Nurse Specialists. We also refer you a cancer support worker (Macmillan Cancer Care Co-Ordinator).

We talk about what support they need. We will try to help with any problems.

All patients are offered a holistic need assessment.

One of the team will meet with the patient to discuss all their concerns and write a care plan.

The team also hold an annual health and wellbeing event for patients treated for lung cancer.

Follow up care

After Lung Cancer treatment at other hospitals, patients come back to MRI.

Radiotherapy and surgery patients come back to clinic at MRI.

We see them for five years and do CT scans during this time.

The follow up is usually in Nurse Led Clinics, we call this Patient Stratified Follow Up clinics.
