Artificial Eye Patient Information
An artificial eye is an ocular prosthesis that is worn when the natural/original eye has been surgically removed. Reasons for requiring an artificial eye can vary from trauma, to eye diseases, or congenital problems.
An impression of the empty socket must be taken to achieve the most comfortable fit and to obtain the best possible movement. The artificial eyes fitted within our department are custom made using a medical grade acrylic, and each artificial eye is and painted whilst you are in the clinic.
The following video will give an overview of what you can expect during each appointment when attending the department of ocular prosthetics at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.
Cosmetic Shell Patient Information
A cosmetic shell is the term used for an ocular prosthesis that is worn over a natural, damaged and phthisical eye. As the prosthesis is worn directly over the eye globe, an accurate fit is crucial to ensure comfort and good movement. The damaged eye must be smaller than your accompanying eye, to accommodate the fitting of a cosmetic shell. Cosmetic shells fitted within our department are made from a medical grade acrylic and are custom made for each patient.
