Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine

Our aim at MFT is to provide excellence in clinical care by providing safe anaesthesia within a Consultant led service. We provide a 24 hour, 7 days a week Consultant-led service in our Emergency and Obstetric theatres and in our Acute and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Units.

Anaesthesia is an acute speciality so our team of Consultants work across many departments in the hospital including the Operating theatres, Maternity, Intensive Care, A and E, on the Resuscitation team, Pre- Operative Assessment, Pain and Exercise Testing clinics.

What is Anaesthesia?

Anaesthesia is a loss of consciousness that is brought about by an injection of drugs into a vein or by breathing a gas that ensures that you will be asleep / unaware and pain free whilst your operation takes place. We can also provide regional anaesthesia where just part of your body can be made numb so that an operation can take place whilst you are awake or in combination with some sedation.

Your Anaesthetic

If you are due to have an operation at MFT you will be invited to attend a pre-op assessment clinic where you will meet one of our nursing team and be given more information about your anaesthetic. Sometimes you may be offered an appointment with one of our Consultant Anaesthetists prior to your day of surgery; this may include some further tests to assess your fitness for surgery. The Anaesthetist will always visit you on admission prior to your surgery to discuss your anaesthetic. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

The Royal College of Anaesthetist estimates that up to 75% of in patients will be cared for by an Anaesthetist at some point during their admission.

Further information for patients about your anaesthetic can be found below:

A number of our Consultants are examiners at The Royal College of Anaesthetists and we actively partake in a continuing education programme by organising meetings and courses to facilitate this. Our trainees in Anaesthesia come from the North West School of Anaesthesia and they always work under the supervision of a Consultant Anaesthetist. We also train junior doctors from other base specialities who rotate to us.
