Gillian’s Story

Although a few members of her family had died from lung cancer, Gillian Glynn from Wigan didn’t have any particular worries about her health. She was busy working in central Manchester in HR and walking her dog. But when she got an invite for a lung health check she decided having been a smoker for much of her life, it was sensible to go.

Gillian’s check found she had lung cancer and she had surgery to remove the tumour last September.
Now she’s doing well, enjoying caravan holidays with her husband and is backing our campaign to encourage everyone to take up your NHS Lung Cancer Screening.

If you’re an ex-smoker or a current smoker aged 55-74 NHS Lung Cancer Screening is for you.

Ken’s Story

Granddad-of-seven Ken Roberts, from Bolton, was active and regularly chasing around after his young grandchildren. He’d been a smoker but had no symptoms he was worried about, so when he was invited for a lung health check initially thought he wouldn’t go.

Luckily for Ken he changed his mind. That decision probably saved his life. Following his lung health check and further tests Ken was diagnosed with very early stage lung cancer. He had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour last July and is now back at work and doing well.

Ken’s is backing an NHS campaign to urge Greater Manchester residents to take up your Lung Cancer Screening when you get your invite. The screening is for ex-smokers and current smokers aged 55-74. Look out for your invite or search Greater Manchester Lung Cancer Screening.

Phil’s Story

Painter and decorator Phil was busy with work so just put his lung health check invitation to one side and nearly forgot about it. He didn’t think he needed it.

A few months later Phil’s work was a bit lighter so he decided he might as well go and get his lung health check after all. It turned out Phil had a small nodule on his lung and further hospital tests showed this was lung cancer. Fortunately thanks to going for screening, Phil’s lung cancer was found at an early stage. Phil had surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital to remove the tumour and is now five years cancer free.

If you smoke or used to smoke and are aged 55-74 NHS Lung Cancer Screening is here for you.
