Cancer affects all of us, directly or through our friends and families. Here at Manchester Royal Infirmary we provide a comprehensive range of services for the effective diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and offer range of personal support to patients with cancer to help them cope with the disease and treatment.
Patients will be supported by a number of different specialist nurses as they progress through their treatment ‘pathway’ It is our aim that all patients have one specific point of nursing contact. This is usually the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for the disease/speciality.
Cancer treatments can involve a number of treatments in different hospitals. The Clinical nurse specialist (CNS) will ensure that patients are well looked after pre and post admission to hospital.
Cancer nurse specialists (CNS) can also be known as the ‘key worker/ Clinical Nurse Specialists. These roles can be varied throughout healthcare. However, within cancer care there are essential skills, knowledge and experience that are required to allow nurses to practice in this role.
Central Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust employ cancer nurse specialists within all the types of Cancer that are treated here. You will also find that cancer services at Trafford, St Marys’ and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The CNS will liaise with patients while at home or in hospital. One of the primary roles of the CNS is to ensure the patient is happy with the level of information they receive about their treatments.

Colorectal
This nursing team works closely with the colorectal surgeons and oncologists, supporting and complimenting services provided to the colorectal patient, their families and carers. The nurses are based in Manchester Royal Infirmary. The Colorectal Nurse Specialist is the key-worker for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Contact is established at diagnosis and continues throughout the patient’s journey.
They provide a vital link with other supportive services such as the Stoma care nurses, specialist services and community nursing teams. Patients can contact the team for advice pre and post -surgery or palliative treatments by telephone. The Colorectal Nurse Specialists works Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Lung
The lung cancer nurse specialists work along side the chest physicians and oncologists to support lung cancer patients and their families. Manchester University NHS FT has two lung cancer specialist nurses who offer a service here at Manchester Royal Infirmary and a specialist lung nurse who provides support to patients & families based at Trafford.
The aim of the role is to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients throughout the disease pathway. The lung cancer nurse can offer expert advice on disease management and symptom control as well as giving practical advice, and information. The lung cancer nurses provide a vital link for patients between hospitals specialist centres and primary care.

Urology
The specialist nursing team based at the Manchester Royal Infirmary work in partnership with the urology consultants who divide their time between Manchester Royal Infirmary and Trafford General Hospital.. All aspects of care for patients with a cancer of the urinary tract are provided. The Urology Specialist Nurses are involved in the diagnosis, treatment, follow up and management of patients. .

Upper GI
The Clinical Nurse Specialists support patients who are diagnosed with a cancer of the oesophagus (gullet) and the stomach. The Nurse specialists work alongside the consultants and other health professionals to ensure your care and treatment are co-ordinated.
They are based at Manchester Royal Infirmary and will support patients and their family from diagnosis through to treatment.

Macmillan Gynaecology
All patients diagnosed with a suspected or proven gynaecology cancer will have a named CNS/ Key worker who the patient or family can contact for support. The team work closely with clinicians and other health professionals both here at St Marys and other hospitals within the Greater Manchester area.
Gynaecological cancers (Women’s cancers), are cancers that start in a women’ reproductive system. These include:
- Cancer of the ovary
- Cancer of the womb – also called uterine cancer or endometrial cancer
- Cancer of the vulva (external genitals)
- Cancer of the cervix (neck of the womb)

Hepato-bilary (liver and pancreas)
A Hepato- bilary nurse specialist is a nurse who specialises in cancers of the pancreas, liver and bile ducts. All Hepato-Biliary Cancer patients referred to the CMFT HPB Team will have a named CNS/Keyworker and have direct access to the Nurse specialist from diagnosis through to follow up care.
The Nurse specialist links in closely with The Christie Hospital and refers all appropriate patients directly to the HPB Oncologist. This maybe on diagnosis, post operatively or during longer term surveillance.
The Nurse Specialist co-ordinates each patients pathway until they are admitted for surgery/intervention. Prior to discharge home the Nurse specialist will ensure that referrals to appropriate community nursing teams are made.

Jaundice Services
The Jaundice Specialist Nurse facilitates the implementation of the Manchester Cancer Jaundice Pathway.
This pathway provides for earlier diagnosis as well as timely referral and improved pathways for patients with cancer, presenting with jaundice.
The aim is to facilitate same day definitive radiological imaging for patients presenting with obstructive jaundice not due to gallstones. Early diagnosis of pancreatic and biliary cancer, timely referral and improved patient experience will also be a major part of the role. The role includes the facilitation of fast-track referral for jaundiced patients with pancreatic cancer for early surgery. The aim is to reduce overall complications and prolong survival.

Haematology
We are a team of four nurses who act as keyworkers for patients with different types of blood cancers. We each specialise in slightly different disease groups as there are so many complex diseases within this field but our overall knowledge of the care and treatment of these patients allows us to cross cover and provide information, support and guidance to patients diagnosed with any type of haematological cancer.
We see patients in outpatient clinics and during hospital admission. As a patients keyworker we aim to be there from diagnosis, through treatment and follow up as a point of contact for any questions or concerns any of our patients may have.
We offer advice and information, co-ordinate treatment and refer patients on to other health and social care agencies that would benefit the patient at any point during their treatment. As well as acting as an advocate for patients we strive to ensure that the holistic needs of patients are met throughout their cancer journey.
We aim to make the daunting and frightening experience of having a blood cancer and its treatment a little more bearable by being there to answer questions and provide support to patients and their families.

Head and Neck
The Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) work alongside the Maxillofacial, Ear Nose and Throat, and Thyroid surgeons to support patients and families affected by this cancer.
The two Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialists who support those patients that need surgery here at the Manchester Royal Infirmary are Anna Chittim and Melanie Hawkins. Barbara Farrimond can be contacted for those patients who are seen first at Trafford General Hospital.
The nurse specialists provide support to patients and their families, from diagnosis, throughout their treatment and following treatment. Acute Oncology
The aim of Acute Oncology Service is to support clinical areas within Adult Services for patients who have an acute presentation relating to their diagnosed or undiagnosed cancer.
We advise and manage acutely unwell patients who have been admitted to the hospital with:
- Problems from a known cancer;
- Complications from radiotherapy and chemotherapy;
- A newly diagnosed Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) (where the site of the cancer is unknown)
Hours
Working hours are: 09:00 – 17:00 Monday – Thursday and 09:00- 20:00 on Friday, excluding weekends and bank holidays.
