Biography

Miss Hirji undertook her medical training at The Royal Free and University College London Medical School, and was also awarded First-Class Honours for an Intercalated BSc in Neuroscience during this period. She completed her ophthalmology specialty training in London and the South East of England. This was followed by a clinical fellowship in Medical Retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital, through which she gained extensive experience in the fields of adult and paediatric retinal disease, as well as uveitis. Miss Hirji subsequently went on to a research fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, which culminated in a PhD in Inherited Retinal Disease. During her time in research, she was co-investigator for a large multi-centre Phase I/II clinical trial exploring gene therapy in achromatopsia. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and, additionally, two book chapters.

Miss Hirji was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2021. Alongside her clinical and research expertise, she has a background of involvement in providing formal and informal teaching to medical students, postgraduate students and non-medical healthcare professionals. She has frequently examined for the MRCP(UK) examinations for doctors in general medical training, and with her broad knowledge base in general medicine, aims to deliver holistic patient-centered care to those with eye disease.
