Treatments provided
The Acute Oncology team advise on acute oncology emergencies, such as:
- Side effects from anti-cancer treatments
- Complications from cancer itself
- Metastatic spinal cord compression
- New space occupying lesions
- Patients presenting with new cancer diagnosis
- Cancer of unknown primary site
Team overview
The team consists of:
- 2 part time Acute Oncology Consultants (one on each site) and who also work at The Christie
- 6 full time Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists
- 1 administrator

AOT Working Hours
The AOT are onsite at ORC and NMGH during the following working hours:
- Monday – Friday 8:00 – 16:00
- Saturday – 9:00 – 13:00
- Sunday – 09:00 – 13:00
AOS provide a cross site service at ORC and NMGH at the weekend and bank holidays 09:00-13:00. Please note that site cover at weekends alternates between the 2 hospitals depending on clinical need. However Acute Oncology will be available on HIVE secure chat “Acute Oncology Clinical Team ORC” or “Acute Oncology Clinical Team NMGH” within service hours.
Personalised Cancer Care
The Acute Oncology Team work closely with a cancer care co-ordinator to ensure patients can have a Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) completed when admitted into the hospital and this can also be facilitated on discharge.
Follow up including Personalised Stratified Follow up (PSFU)
The Acute Oncology Team will provide support for as long as the patient requires or will signpost the best place to access person-centred and disease-specific support.

A full range of booklets and fact sheets are available in the cancer information centre, and patients can access online resources. The centre also has a selection of audio tapes and videos to be used in the centre or available for loan.
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
Cancer support and information is now based in The Maggie’s Centre.
This is open to all patients and their families/ carers affected by cancer, not exclusive to Christie patients.
