The scope of this specialty is extensive and includes

Maxillofacial Surgery Team deals with facial injuries, head and neck cancers, skin cancer for maxillofacial region, salivary gland diseases, facial disproportion, facial pain, temporo-mandibular joint disorders, temporo-mandibular joint replacement, impacted teeth, cysts and tumours of the jaws, surgical dermatology, as well as oral surgery problems and numerous problems affecting the oral mucosa.

The Restorative Dentistry Team that provides oro-facial prosthodontic rehabilitation of patient after major facial surgery for cancer and trauma, Prosthodontic and restorative rehabilitation of patients with Hypodontia (congenitally missing teeth), supports the management of temporo-mandibular joint disorders, selective specialist restorative treatment beyond the scope of general dental practitioners. We also support the general dental practitioners with advice and treatment plan with cases of intermediate complexity that can be managed in primary care setting.
The Orthodontic service at NMGH is consultant led service with speciality trainees from the University Dental Hospital, dental core trainees, an orthodontic therapist and specialist dental nurses.

We are based within COPD at NMGH and provide a diagnostic, treatment planning and treatment service for those patients with complex malocclusions or complex history. This can include those patients requiring multidisciplinary care in conjunction with other specialities such as OMFS and restorative dentistry as well as those patients with severe skeletal discrepancies, dentofacial trauma and the severe congenital absence of teeth. We offer treatment to both children and eligible adults within the dept.

Services Offered

Treatments are provided as an in-patient or day-case and are undertaken under local or general anaesthetic or conscious sedation.

Where is the service provided?

Day surgery is carried out at Fairfield general and Rochdale infirmary with in-patient work being undertaken at North Manchester. Out-patients are seen at Oldham, Rochdale, Fairfield and North Manchester. Restorative Dentistry services are provided at Oldham and North Manchester. Facial prosthetic services are provided at North Manchester. Orthodontic services are provided at North Manchester and Fairfield General.
