This involves assessing acutely unwell children referred by their GP or PED (the Paediatric Emergency department), making a diagnosis and initiating treatment.
Where necessary we will manage their hospital admission. We work closely with our colleagues in the community nursing team to ensure children are managed at home wherever possible.
We also provide inpatient input for children under the surgical teams or with complex care needs.
We see children in outpatients referred by their GP with common medical conditions.
We have special interest clinics in diabetes, epilepsy, renal problems and rheumatology.
Our consultants contribute to other teams within RMCH including the Safeguarding team, Chronic Fatigue Service and Trauma team. They also make significant contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
