Oral Maxillo- Facial & Facial Plastic Surgery Department

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons engage in the diagnosis and management of paediatric and adult conditions that require expertise from the backgrounds of both medicine and dentistry such as:

• Craniofacial Trauma
• Oral & Cervicofacial Infections
• Head and Neck Cancers that include Oral, Oropharyngeal, Skull Base, Cutaneous and Salivary Oncology
• Reconstructive Head and Neck Surgery including Microvascular Free Flaps and 3D Planned Patient Specific Implants
• Facial Soft Tissue and Skeletal Deformity
• Cleft Lip & Palate
• Paediatric Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
• Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
• Benign Salivary Gland Diseases
• Vascular Malformations of Head and Neck
• Facial Palsy Service
• Minor Surgery – Impacted Teeth, Cysts and Tumours of the Jaws and Benign Lumps & Bumps of the Head and Neck Region.

The surgical team comprises:

• 8 Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
• 4 Specialist Registrars
• 8 Dental Core Trainees
• 2 Staff Grades (working as a job share)
• 1 TIG Interface Head & Neck Fellow
• Clinical fellows (variable)

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgical team work closely with the Ear Nose and Throat, Oculoplastic, Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontic and Interventional Radiology Teams as appropriate. The Craniofacial Trauma and Skull Base Cancer / Reconstruction operating service also extends to Salford Royal Hospital for complex cases requiring joint procedures with neurosurgery.

The designated specialist services provided by the Maxillofacial team with regional multidisciplinary teams within Greater Manchester include Skull Base Reconstruction, Head and Neck Sarcoma Service, Paediatric Head and Neck Oncology/Reconstruction, Airway Management of Neonates with Severe Micrognathia, Skin cancer and Adult & Paediatric Facial Palsy/Reanimation service.

In addition to the surgeons, the Head and Neck Cancer team within this unit incorporates Specialist Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists, Dieticians, Restorative Consultants and Oncologists (Christie Hospital).

The Regional Cleft Service is provided by a multi-disciplinary team comprising Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Orthodontists, Speech and Language Therapists, Audiologists, Restorative Dentists, Health Visitors, Psychologist, Geneticist and Specialist Nurses.

The outpatient department at Peter Mount Building runs five days per week and delivers specialist OMFS clinics including weekly Head & Neck Cancer MDT (linked in with Christie Hospital), Trauma clinics, minor surgical and other diagnostic procedures.

The head and neck ward (ETCS) for adult in-patient activity is a 27-bed ward located on the 2^nd Floor in the main building of Manchester Royal Infirmary. The in-patient paediatric service is delivered from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
