Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) is the centre for the East Sector providing comprehensive renal care for approximately 1.4 million people living in North, South and Central Manchester, Tameside & Glossop, Stockport, South Trafford and South Cheshire, Services provided at MRI includes outpatient, inpatient, pre-dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis, Lipid aphaeresis and ABO transplantation. The renal department is also a partner in the regional kidney/pancreas transplantation unit also based at MRI, which performs over 200 transplants per year. Hope Hospital is the centre for the West Sector. –
Inpatient facilities are provided on wards 36 and 37 and together with the haemodialysis unit, outpatient, peritoneal dialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) training unit, administrative offices as well as the research laboratories are situated in purpose built accommodation. The department manages over 100 renal failure patients per year.
Maintenance haemodialysis is provided at MRI (29 stations) and in satellite units (spokes) at Altrincham (20 stations), Tameside (18 stations), Octagon Unit (20 stations in the main dialysis unit with a separate training and self-care area of 10 stations), Macclesfield (12 stations) and Stockport (16 stations). An increasing number of patients also undertake haemodialysis in their own homes, supported by renal community nurses, following a period of training in the home dialysis training unit currently based at Wythenshawe but managed by MRI. In addition the directorate manages around 90 peritoneal dialysis patients.
All the renal consultants see patients with general nephrology problems but in addition have their own special interests which include peritoneal dialysis, metabolic bone disease, diabetic nephropathy, glomerular disease, critical care nephrology, Vaculitis, antenatal and renal transplantation. As well as undertaking outpatient clinics at MRI, the renal consultants undertake clinics at North Manchester General, Wythenshawe, Macclesfield, Stepping Hill, Tameside, Altrincham hospital and Trafford hospitals.
The renal department at MRI has close ties with diabetes and vascular surgery, the departments of biochemistry, immunology, nuclear medicine and radiology as well as with the University Medical School. The department also provides renal support to the regional cardio-thoracic transplant unit at Wythenshawe Hospital.
The department is actively involved in a variety of clinical and basic science research projects. The Manchester Institute of Nephrology and Transplantation (MINT) co-ordinate research.
