Who is the service for?
This service is for all patients either referred in by their GP or seen as an emergency with conditions that may affect the blood vessels (blockage or dilatation) to any part of the body, except the heart. The service also treats varicose veins, lymphodema and foot complications of diabetes.
Introduction
The vascular surgery service at NMGH provides out-patient clinics and in-reach services to patient at North Manchester General Hospital affected by peripheral arterial, venous disease and other vascular problems.
Outpatient clinics are held in the Diabetes centre, where there is full access to a multi-disciplinary team and relevant diagnostics tests including arterial duplex scans and CT Angiography.
All emergency, urgent and in-patient vascular care for patients in the North Manchester General Hospital population is currently provided by MFT at the Royal Oldham Hospital.
Services offered
Outpatient clinics and in-patient review service for conditions including:
- Critical limb threatening ischaemia (severe disease of the lower limb arteries)
- Intermittent claudication (Pain on walking due to peripheral arterial disease)
- Vascular complications of diabetes (foot ulceration with underlying arterial disease)
- Chronic Mesenteric arterial disease (disease of the blood vessels supplying the bowel)
- Carotid Artery disease (that may have cause a stroke or mini stroke)
- Aortic and peripheral artery aneurysms
- Deep and superficial venous disease (severe varicose veins and/or leg ulceration)
- Thoracic Outlet syndrome

MFT currently provides inpatient vascular services at Manchester Royal Infirmary and The Royal Oldham Hospital. The Royal Oldham Hospital currently provides the majority of vascular services to the North Manchester Hospital population. However, some patients may need to be treated at Manchester Royal Infirmary for conditions such as thoracic aortic and other complex aortic disease.
Referral Information
Referrals to the outpatient department are made by GPs and other health professionals.
For clinical emergencies, the on-call Vascular Surgery team at Royal Oldham Hospital Should be contacted via the Northern Care Alliance Switchboard on 0161 624 0420.
For clinical review of inpatients at North Manchester Hospital the Royal Oldham Vascular Surgery on call team should be contacted.
Please bring details of medicines currently being taken to all outpatient appointments.
