Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)

We provide an emergency ENT on-call service for the whole of South Manchester, Stockport, Macclesfield, Buxton and South Trafford.

Our outpatient department delivers general and specialist clinics including for thyroid conditions, and general ear, nose, and head and neck lumps, running five days per week. In addition there is a rapid access ENT clinic every morning for urgent GP and A&E referrals. We also provide specialist care for complex conditions including tumours of the throat and larynx, head and neck cancers, and thyroid disorders. We work closely with colleagues in Audiology and Speech therapy to meet our patients’ full range of diagnostic and treatment needs.

Conditions treated by the ENT department include:

Ear: hearing and deafness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), infections, glue ear, perforated ear drum, otosclerosis, cholesteatoma, dizziness and vertigo.

Nose: Sinusitis, allergic hayfever, allergic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, nasal injuries, nasal polyps, tumours of the nose, blocked nose.

Throat: Sore throat, lump in the throat, bad breath (halitosis) hoarseness and laryngitis, snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.

Head and neck: Facial skin lesions, head and neck cancer.

Surgery

Our ENT surgeons perform the full range of specialised ENT surgery. This includes: surgery to remove cancerous tumours; cosmetic surgery to the ears and nose in partnership with our Plastic Surgery colleagues; tonsillectomy; grommet insertion; adenoidectomy; and surgery to remove blockages to the nose and ears.

Facilities

We have a compact unit consisting of a head and neck ward for adults, based next to two ENT theatres and a paediatric department one floor below, which allows us to work very efficiently and improves communication. We work closely with the regional departments of Plastics, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, and Sleep Medicine at MFT, to complement the services we deliver to patients.

Both outpatient and day case ENT services are provided at MFT’s Withington and Macclesfield Hospitals with the inpatients being concentrated at MFT’s Wythenshawe Hospital. We are a unit of five consultants.

Surgery is carried out in the F-block theatre 12 which is a two-suite operating theatre at the end of Ward F9, the ENT ward. This makes transferring patients between the ward and theatre extremely convenient.

Referrals

Patients are referred to the service through their GPs, hospital consultants, or through the 24/hour emergency on-call service through the 999 service or A&E departments.
