Anti-Coagulation Services (NMGH)

Introduction

The Community Anticoagulant Service at North Manchester General Hospital was established in 1996. It has a long track record of delivering a safe, high-quality service. It is led by the Lead Nurse Betty Brough and delivered by experienced anticoagulant Non-Medical Prescribing Specialist Nurses. Haematology advice is available for more complex cases. Services are available Monday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00 excluding Bank Holiday. A dedicate administration team provide support for patients and the team.  A telephone answering and adviceline is also available for patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.

Services offered

  • Community and hospital-based clinics for patients on warfarin across North, Central and South Manchester.

Community clinics provide a more confinement location for patients to attend reducing traveling time and freeing clinic space within the hospitals.

  • A Bridging service so patients can safely interrupt their warfarin therapy with low molecular weight heparin.

North Manchester patients can be seen at NMGH by the Specialist Nurses who will prescribe a treatment plan whilst warfarin is interrupted.

  • A domiciliary service for housebound patients.

Patients who are unable to get to clinic are seen in their own home.

  • A self-testing programme freeing patients from attending clinic appointments.

Patients are loaned meters to allow them to test at home. This gives patients greater freedom and convenience.
