Bury South MP Christian Wakeford visited North Manchester General Hospital to hear about plans for a new Outpatient Centre and Main Hospital with 100% single inpatient rooms.
The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the New Hospital Project and what the investment will mean for patients, staff and communities across North Manchester, Bury and the wider area.
The redevelopment is part of the Government’s national New Hospital Programme, with £1.5 billion of investment to replace ageing buildings with modern healthcare facilities. Current plans include a new Outpatient Centre and Main Hospital.
Plans will support the transformation of care while bringing wider benefits through jobs, apprenticeships, training and skills opportunities for local people. The new facilities are also being planned to provide modern, accessible environments supported by digital technology.
Work starts on the Outpatient Centre next year with the new Main Hospital set to be complete by 2035. Services will continue as normal throughout the build.
Joanne Rowe, Chief Executive at North Manchester General Hospital, said:
“It was a pleasure to welcome Christian to North Manchester General Hospital and share our plans for the future. Our hospital has served local communities for more than 150 years and this investment gives us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create the modern facilities our patients and colleagues deserve.
“Importantly, this is about more than new buildings. It is about working with our patients, staff and communities to create a hospital that will improve health and wellbeing for generations to come.”
Darren Banks, Deputy Trust Chief Executive at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“The New Hospital Project represents a major investment in the future of healthcare for North Manchester and the wider communities we serve. It was valuable to speak with Christian about our plans and the difference this programme can make, both to patient care and through the wider opportunities it can create for local people.”
Commenting on the visit, Christian Wakeford MP said:
“This is a hugely exciting opportunity for North Manchester and the communities our NHS serves such as Bury South.
“For a long time, patients and hardworking NHS staff have had to make do with Victorian era hospital buildings, that are no longer fit for the future.
“Seeing these ambitious plans firsthand shows the scale of what could be achieved. A modern hospital isn’t just about new buildings, it’s about giving patients the care and dignity they deserve, and giving our brilliant NHS staff the facilities they need to do their jobs.
“An investment of this scale also has the potential to create jobs and opportunities for local people, delivering benefits well beyond the hospital itself. A hospital is never just about the bricks and mortar, it’s always been about the wider community. The visit to North Manchester really confirmed to me that these plans and the ambitions that sit alongside them, are about investing in the community in Crumpsall just as much as it’s about building a new hospital.
“I’ll continue working closely with NHS leaders to support these plans and help ensure North Manchester gets the modern healthcare facilities it deserves.”
