What are the next steps?

You'll receive an invitation letter in the post from your GP. When we are next in your area.

Following this, you will receive a telephone call and text to confirm your eligibility and your appointment.

What will happen during my Lung Health Check?

Your appointment will be on a mobile clinic, in your local community, with a Lung Health Check Nurse. They will ask you questions about your breathing, overall lung health, lifestyle, and medical history. You may need to have a low-dose CT scan, which should happen on the same day, at the mobile clinic.

What happens after the Lung Heath Check?

There are three possible results from your lung health check:

No problems found – the Specialist nurse may find nothing further to investigate and you will be discharged from the Lung Health Check Programme. A letter will be sent to you and your GP, to inform them.

Referral to your GP – If any problem with your breathing or lung health is found then you may be referred to your GP or to another NHS team in the community.

Offered a Low dose CT scan of your lungs - Whether you are offered a low dose CT scan will depend on whether you are at risk of getting lung cancer now or in the future. We work out your risk from your history of smoking, lifestyle factors, and yours and your family's' medical history. The nurse will help you to choose whether the scan is right for you. We will write to your GP so they know about the appointment. If you choose to have the CT scan you will then be enrolled into the Lung Health Check Screening Programme and you will receive the outcomes of the scan via telephone and/or via a letter. You may need to come to hospital for further tests.

If you have any of the below symptoms or are concerned about your lung health please contact your GP:

Persistent cough that lasts three weeks or more
Breathlessness
Repeat chest infections
Chest and/or shoulder pain
Loss of appetite and/or unexplained weight loss
Change in a long term cough, or a cough that gets worse
Coughing up blood
Unexplained fatigue or lack of energy
Hoarseness
Finger clubbing
Blood clots

What are the benefits of having a Lung health Check?

This can identify signs of cancer at an early stage when it is much more treatable - ultimately saving move lives. Your lung health check appointment is also an opportunity for other respiratory conditions to be identified, with treatment arranged. And if you are still a smoker, then you can receive support to quit from the smoking cessation nurses, who work as part of the team on the mobile units.
