Biography

Dr Anirban Maitra is currently employed as a Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine (Paediatric Pulmonologist) at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (Central Manchester University Hospitals), the largest single-site tertiary children’s hospital in the UK. He serves as the Director of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Unit, the largest paediatric tertiary centre in the UK, caring for children with CF. He has previously led clinical initiatives in the treatment of bronchiectasis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Dr Maitra also provides private consultations at Alexandra Hospital and Spire Manchester Hospital.

Graduating from Calcutta Medical College, India, Asia’s second-oldest medical school, practising European Medicine, he has been in the UK since 1997. He has been involved in the tertiary management of children with complex respiratory problems for the past 22 years. He worked as a Research Fellow at Bristol Children’s Hospital, completed the National Grid Training in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at Sheffield Children’s Hospital in 2009, and has been practising as a Consultant since that time. He has worked as a Consultant at the University Children’s Hospital in Leicester, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (Liverpool), and has spent time working in tertiary institutions overseas before joining Manchester Children’s Hospital in 2015.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, Dr Maitra has made significant contributions to research as a former Research Fellow at Bristol Children’s Hospital. His work is published in esteemed journals, including BMJ and Thorax. He has been the principal investigator in numerous clinical trials in CF, including one that led to the development of a groundbreaking ‘triple modulator’ therapy. He has successfully established Manchester as the CF Trials Accelerator Platform Centre (CTAP) and as a centre of the European CF Society Clinical Trials Network (ECFS CTN).

Dr Maitra is actively involved in educating medical students, junior doctors, and healthcare professionals. He has served as the Associate Dean for Student Experience at the University of Manchester’s Medical School. He acts as an academic advisor for undergraduate medical students and supports student-led personal excellence projects. He has frequently presented at both national and international conferences. Dr Maitra is a board member of the CF Research Oversight Board (CF RSOB), the CF Specialist Advisory Group (CF–SAG), the CF Trust Quality Improvement Board, and the CF Trust Diversity in Trials Group.

Dr Maitra is the Chair and Trustee of a Centre for Social Change and Development, a think tank and charity registered in the UK, which he co-founded with his wife. The aim is to promote social change and development through the use of information and social technology.
