Ward 77 is a 28 bed mixed speciality surgical ward. We specialise in Renal, Urology, General Surgery and Ophthalmology. Please refer to the Services page to gain further information about the types of conditions we treat.
Patients coming to Ward 77 have a range of conditions and procedures and length of stay can be as short as 1-2 days or as long as six months or more. Not all patients go to theatre when they come to Ward 77. You may be coming for a period of observations, for intense training which cannot be provided at home or adjustment of your current treatment.
The nursing team and doctors will aim to provide you with a plan of care and expected time in hospital as quickly as possible when you are admitted to the ward. If you have any questions or concerns, and do not feel you are able to get answers to these, please do not hesitate in asking to speak to the Ward Manager who will support you in getting the information you require

Parents of patients have unrestricted visiting. All other visitors may visit between 1.00 pm and 5.00pm and again from 6.00 pm until 8.00 pm. The ward operates a policy of protected mealtimes between 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm, and from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm where all non- essential work stops to allow the children to enjoy their meal in peace and quiet. The main ward lights are also turned off at this time to encourage a quiet environment. Visitors will not be allowed on the ward during these times so please do not be offended if you are asked to leave.
All visitors are required to comply with our infection control policy and use the alcogel on their hands when entering and leaving the ward. We ask that there is maximum of two visitors (not including parents) at the bedside.
Due to infection control restrictions, we cannot accept flowers. We do not allow visitors to bring hot drinks onto the ward unless it is in a flask with a secure lid.
Ward 77 has a playroom staffed by our Play Specialists, which offers various activities for children of all ages. Our Play Specialists are available for distraction and preparation therapies. Televisions are available at each bed space but are switched off at 9.00 pm and DVD players are available for patients to use. There is also a Wii and an X Box.
Ward 77 also has a Teen Zone for teenagers (requiring supervision by an adult) with a chill out area, pool table and television.
Facilities for parents and carers
We can accommodate one parent at the bedside overnight and most bed spaces have a pull down bed for parents. In some cases, accommodation for a second parent can be arranged but this will be away from the ward area. There are allocated parents’ shower rooms and toilets on the ward, along with a parent room where food and hot drinks can be taken. There is a fridge, hot water and toaster for your use. Food items in the ward pantry are for patients only.
Ronald McDonald House operates parents’ accommodation to sleep up to four people in each room. This cannot be booked in advance and is not guaranteed.
