He is the lead clinician for the highly specialised rare disease of Congenital Hyperinsulinism and his research spans the understanding of mechanisms of disease, monitoring and new therapies. He is currently the co-director for the Manchester Child Health Research Institute, providing research leadership in research for babies, children and young people. as well as driving innovations in digital technologies in healthcare. At a national level, he co-chairs the Research Oversight Committee of the Children’s Hospital Alliance, progressing from national research leadership in the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes.

Biography

Professor Banerjee is a children’s growth and hormone specialist with special interest in the rare condition of congenital hyperinsulinism. He was appointed as a consultant in 2006 in Manchester and has gathered wide experience in conditions of puberty, adrenal disorders and thyroid problems. He is the lead for the Northern Congenital Hyperinsulinism (NORCHI) service, providing complex care to infants with congenital hyperinsulinism, affected by hypoglycaemia.

Professor Banerjee’s research interest is primarily focussed on congenital hyperinsulinism; he continues to provide national and international leadership of research in this condition and in paediatric endocrinology more widely. He is an Honorary Clinical Chair in the University of Manchester.

Professor Banerjee received the Trust Proud of You award in 2011. In 2021, he was a finalist in the NHS BAME Health and Social Care Awards for Research & Innovation. In 2025, he received the Sweetest Researcher and Clinician Award from the patient charity Congenital Hyperinsulinism International.
