Post registration Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing factsheet

This course is aimed at dental nurses who assist in the surgery during routine conscious sedation. The National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN), the awarding body, now provide a choice of dental sedation qualifications for dental nurses who assist in conscious sedation in their own area of clinical practice.

Qualifications available are:

Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing (DSN)
This is the traditional full qualification allowing dental nurses to work with all types of sedation commonly used in practice. You will need to be able to gain significant experience in both inhalation and intravenous sedation.

Award in Inhalation Sedation Dental Nursing (IHSN)
This qualification will allow dental nurses to work with patients undergoing treatment with inhalation sedation. You will need to be able to gain significant experience in inhalation sedation.

Award in Intravenous Sedation Dental Nursing (IVSN)
This qualification will allow dental nurses to work with patients undergoing treatment with intravenous sedation. You will need to be able to gain significant experience in intravenous sedation.

The course will run over one year. The study days will include all the theoretical instruction and practical experience needed to fulfil the NEBDN syllabus. Study days will be delivered via a blended learning approach of face to face and MS Teams, you will therefore need to have access to an electronic device with a camera and microphone.

Your progress will be monitored throughout the course and your employer will be kept up to date with your progress. The timetable of events will be discussed at your pre interview and within the course programme.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the course you must:

Be on the GDC register (we can access the GDC register to obtain a copy)
Have support of your employer to assist you in completion of the record of competence (employer must sign a declaration)
Commit to 100% attendance on the given course dates
Be able to meet the clinical requirements for the record of competence

The Award

In order to achieve the award, you will have to successfully complete:

A Record of Competence
A written examination paper (1 hour 30 minutes – multiple choice and extended matching questions) Candidates for each qualification are required to undertake the written examination

Underpinning knowledge and understanding are assessed by the written examination. Practical skills are assessed in the record of competence

Record of Competence

The Record of Competence is designed to demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills during sedation procedures as outlined in the NEBDN syllabus.

Examination date(s) set by the NEBDN

The NEBDN set the final examination date, dependent upon the start date of your programme.

The SAAD award is awarded to the best overall candidate for the examination (nationally).

Interviews

All candidates must attend for an informal interview prior to being accepted on a course. This will take place by the course facilitator and can be either face to face at the school or via MS Teams.
